Special Film Screenings: Zhang Yimou
Bridging the divide between prestigious art film and rousing popular cinema, the filmography of director Zhang Yimou includes many of the most widely recognized Chinese releases of recent decades, including Raise the Red Lantern, Hero and The Road Home. CCIFF will present a special screening of Zhang’s first film, Red Sorghum, on 16 mm film.
Following the screening of Red Sorghum, CCIFF presents the documentary We Made a Film in China, directed by Wang Peng and produced by Mu Xiaoyong. Wang’s film explores the making of Zhang Yimou’s newest film, the highly anticipated historical thriller Shadow.

An inside look at the creation of Zhang Yimou’s new martial-arts marvel Shadow, Wang Peng’s documentary We Made a Film in China is an examination of Zhang’s bold and inspired creative choices, and the struggles he and his crew faced – and beyond that, of the artistry and industry of filmmaking in modern China. Producer Mu Xiaoyong and members of the crew will be in attendance at the CCIFF screening, to share their thoughts and experiences from the production.
